K-12 String Orchestra: Music by Women Composers


Jennifer Drake is the conductor of the Boise Philharmonic Youth Orchestras, and the Serenata Orchestra. In addition to being a conductor, she plays the viola, so that tells you much of what you need to know. She lives in Idaho, where she grows her own potatoes, drives a VW van, and is a mediocre Crossfitter. She has been to Milledgeville, Georgia where she played a chamber music concert and rode a jet ski, but not at the same time. She owns two not exactly Corgis, Fergus and Cameron. She could insert a bunch of big, serious, and impressive projects she’s done, but thinks you might rather know that she had to learn how to make balloon animals as part of a short lived and embarrassing career as a children’s birthday entertainer during college.

Charilyne Rojas has served as the Young Performers Orchestra conductor and Communications Director for the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra since 2021. She is also an active musician, clinician, and adjudicator in the DFW area. A GDYO alumna herself with a lifelong passion for music and teaching, she also directs alumni activities and social media (follow us @greaterdallasyo!) Ms. Rojas loves supporting organizations dedicated to music education and arts advocacy/accessibility.

Studio (Solo & Chamber Music): Music by Historically Excluded Composers


Praised by Classical Voices of North Carolina for “making the violin seem easy, almost as child’s play,” violinist Sophia Han is a versatile performer and passionate educator. Han has appeared as guest soloist with orchestras across the United States and toured with artists including Michael Bublé, Audra McDonald, Stephen Curtis Chapman, and the rock band STARSET. Currently serving as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Violin at Florida State University, Han previously served as the Associate Professor of Violin and Viola at Southeast Missouri State University, and is also highly sought after as an adjudicator, clinician, and masterclass presenter nationwide.


Jovonie Tejero-Holmes is a cellist, conductor, and educator based in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is the founder of the Tejero-Holmes Foundation, which provides free music education and mentorship to BIPOC students, including the Rising Youth Orchestra, where he serves as conductor. He is a cello professor at the College of Southern Nevada and is pursuing a PhD in Music Learning and Teaching at Arizona State University. His work centers on representation, access, and culturally relevant pedagogy.

Dr. Beth Neitzert is the director of orchestras at the Huron School District in Huron, South Dakota. Neitzert holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Huron University, a Master of Music in Music Education from Boston University, and a Doctorate in Musical Arts from Boston University. She is an active clinician and adjudicator within South Dakota and performs regularly as concertmaster of the LyricWood Orchestra at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota. Neitzert is currently a member of the South Dakota ArtsEd Alliance, Past-President for the South Dakota String Teachers Association and a member of the American String Teachers Association.

K-12 String Orchestra: Eclectic Styles


Duane Padilla is an award-winning violinist and educator whose work bridges classical and jazz traditions. A graduate of Northwestern and Yale, he has performed with leading orchestras and chamber ensembles and earned multiple Hawai‘i music awards with The Hot Club of Hulaville and the Mana Music Quartet. Duane teaches at Punahou Music School and has served on the ASTA Board, sharing practical, creative approaches that inspire musicians worldwide through engaging online sessions and festival presentations today.

Studio (Solo & Chamber Music): Music by Women Composers


Qiao Chen Solomon is an internationally acclaimed violinist, violist, and conductor whose work as a recording artist is distinguished by expressive depth, technical refinement, and thoughtfully curated programming. Born in China and based in the United States, she has built a multifaceted career spanning performances and recording projects across North America, Asia, and Europe. A dedicated educator and advocate, Solomon serves as Professor of Music and Director of Strings and Orchestral Studies at Agnes Scott College, where she teaches violin and viola and conducts the college orchestra.


Erin Little is a Los Angeles–based music educator and cellist with over 16 years of teaching experience in public and independent school settings. She serves as the music specialist and orchestra director at Sinai Akiba Academy, where she teaches elementary general music and directs beginning and intermediate string ensembles. She works with Elemental Music as the Prelude conductor and program director. Dr. Little holds a B.M. in Music Education from Michigan State University, an M.M. in Music Education from the University of Michigan, and both an Ed.M. and an Ed.D. in Music and Music Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Joel Schut is Director of Orchestras at Grand Valley State University and Music Director of the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony. He previously served on faculty at the University of Colorado-Boulder, the Crane School of Music SUNY-Potsdam, and in the Michigan public schools. He is an active clinician for all-state, regional, and honor orchestras, and a passionate advocate for school music programs throughout the country.

Natalie Frakes is a musician and educator who believes deeply in the power of music as a vehicle for social change. Her diverse experience spans public school orchestra leadership, teaching artistry with El Sistema-inspired programs, and conducting youth orchestras. She is currently the Director of Orchestras at Niles West High School. She holds degrees from Wayne State University and Longy School of Music.

2026 VSTS Call for New Music Reading Session Music


ASTA members are always looking for new music to add to their repertoire. Don't miss this chance to have your works featured during July 2026 Virtual String Teachers Summit and through our eLearning webinars. In addition, your work may also be featured in the Music Reviews published quarterly in American String Teacher (AST).


ASTA is collecting submissions of works including pieces categorized by grade level, eclectic styles pieces, and works by historically excluded and women composers for both K-12 string orchestra and applied studio. Submissions will be reviewed by committee and selected to be included in the 2026 Virtual String Teachers Summit or in virtual new music reading sessions.


ASTA is opening this call to invite additional submissions to support our July 2026 Virtual String Teachers Summit.


Submissions are invited for specific categories only; other categories are already full with music submitted and selected during our Fall 2025 submission cycle. Please do not resubmit pieces that were previously accepted or submitted during the Fall 2025 Call.


ASTA has partnered with the Institute for Composer Diversity to manage outreach and logistics to make certain historically excluded composers and publishers are invited to participate.



Timeline

  • March 23, 2026: Call for Reading Session Music Opens
  • April 20, 2026: Call for Reading Session Music Closes
  • May 11, 2026: Committee Reviews of Submissions Complete
  • May 18, 2026: Notifications Sent (we will use the score PDF and audio file submitted)


Criteria for Music Submissions

The criteria for repertoire in each reading session is included below. To avoid an overlap in multiple reading sessions, a composition may only be submitted for a single reading session. In the instance when a composition may qualify for multiple reading sessions, the publisher must choose a single reading session in which to submit the composition. Submissions should be new works, arrangements, or editions available. Pieces should not have been submitted for an ASTA Music Reading Session within the last 10 years.


*No Full or Symphonic Orchestra music including instruments outside the string family should be submitted, including chamber music.


K-12 String Orchestra: Repertoire in Grades 1-2

  • Submissions must have a copyright date of 2025 or 2026
  • Submissions should only include grade 1-2 repertoire (along with 0.5 levels up to 2.5); please note that ASTA members have requested repertoire at the 0.5 and 1 grade levels.
  • Submissions can also include repertoire by women and historically excluded composers

K-12 String Orchestra: Repertoire in Eclectic Styles

  • Submissions must have a copyright date of 2025 or 2026
  • Submissions can be any grade level; please note that ASTA members have requested repertoire at the lower grade levels in this submission category.
  • Submissions can also include repertoire by women and historically excluded composers

Applied Studio: Solo and Chamber Music for Violin and Viola by Historically Excluded Composers

  • Submissions can have any copyright date, preference given to more recent works.
  • Submissions should be by historically excluded composers only
  • Submissions can be for any level, based on the ASTA String Syllabus; please note that ASTA members have requested repertoire at the lower grade levels in this submission category, but any grade level may be submitted

Applied Studio: Solo and Chamber Music for Cello, Double Bass, Harp, and Guitar by Historically Excluded Composers

  • Submissions can have any copyright date, preference given to more recent works.
  • Submissions should be by historically excluded composers only
  • Submissions can be for any level, based on the ASTA String Syllabus; please note that ASTA members have requested repertoire at the lower grade levels in this submission category, but any grade level may be submitted


ASTA reserves the right to place submissions into sessions based on the volume and instrumentation needs of pieces received to ensure the opportunity for every piece to be read and heard in a session, whether live or virtual. In the submission process, you will be asked for your preference of session placement, which will be taken into consideration.


For chamber music with instrumentation that spans the Applied Studio sessions listed above, the composer/publisher may select which session to submit the piece to, keeping in mind that ASTA may move the submission based on the number of submissions received and overall instrumentation needs of the reading sessions.


ASTA will provide a list of accepted music submissions to all who attend the summit reading sessions, as well as post the list on the ASTA website as a member resource.



How to Submit Music

All music publishers and self-publishers are encouraged and welcome to submit music for consideration. Additionally, Music Industry Showcase Sessions are available for purchase – you can contact Ellie Dunn for more information and to purchase: ellie@carldunn.com.


Publishers and self-publishers may send up to 4 selections with no more than 1 piece of music per category. If you publish multiple labels, you may submit up to 4 selections from each label.


For the 2026 Virtual String Teachers Summit, we will use the score pdf and audio file that you originally submitted in the call. Please acknowledge by checking the box on the submission form that,

  1. ASTA has your permission to use and display these files (score PDF and audio file) in the summit presentation, and
  2. ASTA has your permission to display the summit presentation video recording on our virtual platform. Attendees must register for the event and will have access to the recordings of the sessions through the end of December 2026.


Include the following information for each piece on the submission form:

  • session selection
  • title
  • composer/arranger
  • publisher's suggested grade level
  • publisher
  • publication date
  • price
  • duration of piece
  • score pdf and mp3 for review and clinician preparation
  • link to piece listing online
  • check the permissions checkbox (see above)


The deadline for music submissions is April 20, 2026.
