ASTA Mentor Program History
ASTA has developed a national mentoring program based on the expressed need of ASTA members, many of whom are the only string/orchestra teacher in their building. The program launched in Spring 2016 with the pre-conference session “Preparing To Be An ASTA Mentor.” During this session, experienced string teachers from across the country learned about the teacher development continuum, mentoring styles, communication strategies, and string/orchestra specific teaching challenges through discussion, video observation, and hands-on activities. Pre-conference facilitators were Dr. Margaret Berg, Dr. Colleen Conway, and Mr. Bob Phillips.
What is the ASTA Mentor Program?
ASTA recognizes that early career teachers (mentees) in their first five years of teaching would benefit from a program where highly qualified string specialists serve as mentors. The ASTA Mentor Program is designed to connect early career teachers who desire additional guidance on their teaching with experienced school string/orchestra teachers. The ASTA Mentor Program committee will connect mentees with a qualified mentor based on mentee areas of interest and mentor background. The mentee and mentor can communicate through email, voice chat, telephone, or in some cases face-to-face. Teaching observations (live or via video) may be included in mentor-mentee discussions.
How do I become a mentee?
Currently, applications are being accepted for 2016-2017 school year. Applicants must be in their first through fifth year of teaching. Applications are due September 30. Completed applications should be submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org.
