Wednesday, 04 March 2020

Join us for a day of community music-making and relationship building through the artform that we all love! This enjoyable pre-conference session will feature a full day of interaction with colleagues through string orchestra rehearsals and a planned culminating informal performance. The day of planned rehearsals will include rehearsal technique strategies and conversation with lots of playing and musical interaction. Participants will gain new insights and rehearsal techniques while rehearsing and playing the repertoire. It will be an active day! Teachers are encouraged to exercise your primary or well developed secondary instrument skills for this event. Repertoire will include pedagogical compositions, arrangements, and eclectic styles, as well as great standard repertoire. Music will be distributed 1 month before the conference so participants can prepare ahead of time. Instruments will be available upon request. Performance attire will be “business casual.” Presenters: Scott Laird,

These questions will be answered as you play along through interactive sequential exercises:Ê How do you practice Creativity? How to teach the creative process? How to internalize chords and scales as a basis for tonal improvisation and technical practice at the same time? How can you easily memorize rhythmic and harmonic song forms, and learn the bass, inner voices, and melodic roles within these forms?

Topics to be addressed will include: identifying mentees as learners, identifying mentors as teacher educators, and using digital mentoring environments to enhance engagement with novice educators. We will also reflect on as well as practice mentoring strategies and approaches including video-based shared reflection that supports intentional planning for mentoring. MUSIC INDUSTRY SHOWCASE: Improving the Tone Quality of Your Orchestra

Making the refinement of tone quality a high priority in rehearsal will greatly improve an orchestra's performance. Dr. Michael Hopkins will focus on the physical motions that lead to quality core tone in orchestra. Common problems with posture, bow hold, bow arm motion, bow strokes, and ensemble will be addressed, along with solutions that address the causes. Dr. Hopkins will show video and notational examples of the techniques he will describe. Many of these strategies can be used at all levels, from elementary to college level, as developmental or remedial strategies. Some will be more appropriate for use with younger students, some with older students.
